Matthew’s Story

Remembering Matthew Lane Hobby

Matthew Lane Hobby was a gifted, creative, and deeply loved young person. He was known for his curiosity, his warmth, and the way he connected with the world around him.

This page is dedicated to remembering Matthew — his life, his passions, and the legacy that continues to shape the work of The Matthew Lane Hobby Foundation.

Who Matthew Was

Matthew was known for his creativity, curiosity, and the way he connected with the world around him. He had a thoughtful spirit and a quiet depth that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

He expressed himself through creativity, humor, and genuine connection, and he had a way of making people feel seen and included. Matthew’s presence mattered — to his family, his friends, and everyone whose life he touched.

Matthew’s life continues to remind us that every person’s story has meaning — and that connection, compassion, and understanding can make a lasting difference.

When Loss Entered the Story

In 2011, Matthew died by suicide at a young age.

His loss forever changes those who loved him, and it revealed an urgent need for greater awareness, education, and compassion around mental health — especially for young people.

Matthew’s story is one shared by far too many families, and it is this reality that drives the Foundation’s commitment to helping others feel less alone and better supported.

By sharing Matthew’s story, we hope to honor his life while working to prevent other families from experiencing the same loss.

From Loss to Purpose

Matthew’s story did not end with loss. In the years that followed, his family searched for ways to honor his life while supporting others impacted by mental health challenges and suicide loss.

What began as a small, mission-driven effort grew into a deeper commitment to awareness, education, and connection — and ultimately led to the creation of The Matthew Lane Hobby Foundation.

The Foundation exists to help individuals and families feel seen, supported, and less alone, while working to reduce stigma and promote meaningful conversations around mental health.

This work is rooted in love, remembrance, and the belief that every life — and every story — matters.
