How to Help Someone Else
If you’re concerned about someone you care about, knowing what to look for and how to start the conversation can make a meaningful difference. These resources offer guidance on recognizing warning signs, offering support, and taking next steps when needed.
Warning Signs
to Watch For
Talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden
Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed
Noticeable changes in mood, sleep, or behavior
Giving away belongings or saying goodbye in unusual ways
Increased use of alcohol or substances
If you notice multiple warning signs or escalating behavior, encourage professional support and use crisis resources when needed.
How to Start the Conversation
Choose a private, calm moment to talk
Share your concern using “I” statements (“I’ve noticed…” / “I’m worried about you…”)
Listen without judgment, interruption, or rushing to solutions
Validate their feelings even if you don’t fully understand
Encourage additional support when appropriate
What to Do If
You’re Worried
Stay connected — ongoing check-ins matter
Help them identify trusted supports (family, counselor, physician, clergy)
If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services or crisis support
Do not promise secrecy if safety is at risk
Take care of yourself — supporting someone can be emotionally demanding
